The Sergio estate is located in Contrada Baroni near Noto (Sicily), in the ELORO DOC zone, which one of the best suited to the cultivation of the Nero d'Avola and Moscato di Noto varieties. The winery is at present run by Baron Giovanni Sergio, and was foundend in the second half on the 18 century by his paternal great-great-grandfather, don Michele Mastrogiovanni Tasca. The first intensive farming, however, was introduced by Baron Luigi Sergio, great-granfather of the present owner. Amongst other things, he had millstones, which can still be seen today, built for the grapes produced by the vines he had planted. Under the management of Baron Luigi Sergio, father of the present owner, the estate underwent a complete overhaul, and a large part was turned over to the cultivation of citrus fruit, olives and, above all, vines. For some years now, a strong sense of tradition and the excellent terroir has led the Sergio family to concetrate on wine production, aiming to exalt the quality of the native Nero d'Avola and Moscato di Noto varieties. Precious help has been provided by the winemaker Giovanni Rizzo, and by Prof. Lucio Brancadoro. The cellars are housed in period outbuildings, specially renovated to house modern winemaking facilities. The vines are planted in a single block, trained using an espalier system and pruned in spurred cordon. At the same time, the density of the rootstocks is highly concentrated, allowing a maximum yield of no more than 600 tonnes/ hectare. Alongside the native varieties, international varieties have also been planted.
